HOBOKEN, NJ — First, a branch of Bank of America at 615 Washington St. closed for good this past August, and then, the bank announced that its flagship branch downtown will also close. But the latter will reopen on Monday, Dec. 11 in larger digs at the foot of Washington street.

Bank of America at 1 Firehouse Plaza, at the corner of Second and Hudson streets, originally was scheduled to close last week — but the closure was postponed until the day the new branch opens in mid-December.

The bank will reopen at a larger spot at 55 Washington St., which was a Barnes & Noble years ago.

Construction has been ongoing on that square block in Hoboken. It's currently anchored by CVS. A new multispecialty medical practice opened in that plaza on Monday, Nov. 27.

According to the Hoboken Historical Museum, the 1 Firehouse Plaza site was the original location of Hoboken's Fire Department headquarters until the 1970s. The building was demolished and replaced by First Jersey Bank around 1976. (See the photo above.)
