Cake Boss Recap: It's Mother's Day And Someone Gives Birth
What you missed on last night's Cake Boss.

This week's episode opens with the announcement that Mother's Day is looming, which of course brings crazy cake season. Judging by the lines we now see outside the bakery on any given day, I can't imagine there being a slow season for the good folks of Carlo's Bakery. Apparently, cake is recession-proof.
Now, Buddy is meeting with Karen and Caryl of The Adoptive Parents Committee, a group of do-gooders who help first-time parents, parentless children and childless parents. Karen and Caryl (this getting to be a tongue-twister) want a cake for the Committee's Mother's Day celebration. And because of how inspiring this organization is, Buddy is moved to create a beautiful cake.
This cake, like the last few we've seen him do, is going to be about the size of Jupiter. It will have six tiers and all six will be adorned with flowers and children – two things I assume most mothers enjoy. Buddy plans to put all sorts of children here, because it's all about the children. Someone is finally thinking of the children so we can all stop asking, "what about the children?"

Except it's not all about them. Buddy just said he will be putting a bunch of candied flowers (from orchids to peonies to hydrangeas to roses) on this here cake, because it's all about the flowers. What about the children, Buddy? Will someone please think of the children!
The staff has run out of things to talk about so conversation centers on how hot it is in the East Coast. Now, if this is around Mother's Day, I don't know how hot it could really have been. My birthday is right around that time, and I remember it being a very cool night. So cool in fact that I had to wear a jacket and a scarf. As a journalist, this is one of the many hard-hitting questions you must ask when watching Cake Boss.

In any case, the stifling heat leads to reminiscing about Buddy's dad's lemon ice. The words lemon and ice leads young Anthony to a state of confusion, because according to the Boss, while there were many flavors that didn't revolve around lemon involved, it was still called lemon ice. I understand why Anthony was confused by this, but I don't understand why it was discussed in the extent it was. Long story short, the CB appoints Joey as lemon ice maker, he who shall do battle with the oppressive dictator that is summer.
So Lisa, one of Buddy's sisters, is almost nine months pregnant, and she looks it. She's waddling around the bakery working her pregnant self into a sweet-induced tizzy. But really she just wanted a chocolate covered strawberry. The pregnant lady will get you every time.
So the cake for the Adoptive Parents Committee (or as Buddy so eloquently calls it, "the adoption cake") is almost finished, but like all artistic masters, Buddy isn't quite prepared to say so. He decides to paint blades of grass on the fondant shell. Flowers have to come from somewhere, after all.
Buddy's children are at the bakery to make something for their mother, and Buddy's lovely wife, Lisa. They're making a cake (what else? Buddy is certainly not going to sit there and make her a car) and sugar flowers. The kids are very adorable. They seem to enjoy what they're doing. I hope they realize this is just the beginning of their lives as cakesters. Buddy says having this time with his kids in the bakery brought back memories of him with his dad from back in the day. It was a very endearing moment indeed.
Buddy and his children surprise Lisa with the cake. She loves it.
Joey is making the lemon ice. Buddy keeps saying that if everything goes well, the bakery could begin selling these things again. We get a look at the recipe he's working off of, and Joey thinks it looks like a Civil War document. Well, Joey, you've just revealed the secret to the Union's victory over the South.
Everyone loves the ice. So go ahead and shlep to Carlo's if you're looking for lemon ice that comes in a variety of surprisingly un-lemon flavors.
Buddy now gets to working on another Mother's Day cake. This time it's a pecan pie for Mama. He wants to make sure she knows just how much he loves her by making her favorite pie. And as such the reveal was a very touching moment. A moment made better when Mama calls the pie her favorite cookie.
Lisa, nine-months-pregnant-chocolate-covered-strawberry-taking Lisa, is giving birth. Remy, as the alleged father, makes his way to the hospital.
The CB is finishing up the adoption cake, and it's made clear that the cake is about both the children and flowers, because it's the eyes of mothers, both count for essentially the same thing. As for the cake, the children are about the same size as the flowers so they look like they're growing out of the blades of grass like something from Children of the Corn. But as such, the good people of the Committee don't seem to care. They're happy with the cake. Cue deliriously happy faces.
At the hospital, everyone visits Lisa and the new member of the family, Isabella, who is beautiful. Congrats to the proud parents. And Buddy makes an announcement that I'm sure means even more to Lisa: she's Employee of the Month.
