Gap, JC Penney, Lord & Taylor: Here Are NJ Retail Stores That Downsized Or Closed In 2021

From Gap to J.C. Penney to Lord & Taylor, some chains downsized or closed stores throughout New Jersey this year.

NEW JERSEY — As some businesses reorganize and others pivot amid the pandemic, several companies and chains announced they will close all or some of their retail stores, including in New Jersey. The chains range from the Gap to J.C. Penney to Lord & Taylor.

Below is a list of chains that have announced they will downsize, close stores, or rebrand some stores in the near future:

American Eagle — The company said it will close over 200 locations in malls over 3 years, according to NJ.com.

Banana Republic — Banana Republic and its parent company Gap Inc. said they'll close as many as 350 Gaps and Banana Republics through 2023.

Bed Bath & Beyond — The company announced plans to close over 200 stores, but will launch new store brands, NJ.com said.

CVS Health — CVS will close up to 300 of its 10,000 stores nationwide.

Disney — Disney closed 60 locations across the country in 2021, NJ.com said, including in New Jersey.

DSW — Designer Brands, Inc. may close several dozen stores, NJ.com said.

Gap — Banana Republic and its parent company Gap said they'll close as many as 350 Gaps and Banana Republics through 2023.

JC Penney — JC Penney reorganized in 2020 and closed 175 stores, while it still maintains 671.

Office Depot — According to NJ.com, the company closed its last two stores in November.

Starbucks — The company will open 500 stores focusing on drive-through and pickup, but plans to close several hundred others around the country, NJ.com said.

Among these, a Baby Gap children's store Hoboken has posted a sign in the window saying it will close soon, and eagle-eyed Reddit users have found evidence that a Nike store may arrive in its place. READ MORE: Nike May Replace Baby Gap In Hoboken.
