JCP&L Scam Still Ongoing on Monmouth County

Businesses are still reporting calls from scammers claiming to be JCP&L

HAZLET, NJ--Businesses in Monmouth county are still getting calls from scammers claiming to be JCP&L representatives, Hazlet police say.

The caller ID will show the call as coming from a JCP&L office, but there are red flags to help you distinguish between real and scam.

Many of the scam calls threaten to turn off electric service to the business unless an outstanding bill is paid, which goes against JCP&L's policy of a warning period. The scammers will then ask that business purchase Green Dot Money Cards to pay their bill, something the real JCP&L won't do.

“It is important to note that the callers all sound real. They are well-spoken, polite. They all sound very professional. They have all your account information, personal information, everything they need to sound and feel legitimate, but they are not – they are scammers,” Monmouth County Prosecutor Gramiccioni said earlier this month about the scams.

Any business or private resident who receives this call should hang up and immediately call the police.

These scams have been plaguing Monmouth County for years, but have seen an uptick recently, including door-to-door salespeople asking to see energy bills (you can see a video of that here).
