HOLMDEL, NJ – District parents were notified Wednesday after a Holmdel student was reportedly exposed to the coronavirus, prompting the cancelation of athletic practices and the closure of the Holmdel High School athletic complex for the remainder of the week.

On July 22, an email alert was sent to families warning that a student member of the field hockey team had been exposed to the virus at an off-campus event. According to the release, signed by interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Leroy Seitz, the student has been instructed to remain under quarantine and is currently awaiting test results.

“Although it is not required by the NJSIAA or the CDC, out of an abundance of caution we are closing the Complex to all students for the remainder of this week and canceling our summer workout scheduled for Thursday, July 23rd to limit possible exposure and to thoroughly clean the High School,” wrote interim Superintendent Dr. Leroy Seitz in an email alert.

“The Holmdel Township School District along with the NJSIAA COVID-19 Task Force has worked extremely hard to provide an environment that is safe and well-monitored for our student athletes. We will continue to ensure all the outlined procedures are followed and continue to provide a safe environment for your children to participate in athletics.”

Seitz also asked that field hockey team members who attended a July 21 workout should self-monitor for symptoms over the next several days. Per the letter, the district will release additional information to the community by the end of day Friday.

On Thursday, district families were again alerted, this time with news that a student on the Holmdel High School boys' basketball team tested positive for the coronavirus. He was exposed to the virus at an off-campus location on July 19, according to the alert.

Penned by interim Superintendent Dr. Leroy Seitz, the release also detailed that the student will be required to self-quarantine for 14 from the positive test and is instructed to follow his doctor's orders. Read more: Holmdel High School Basketball Player Tests Positive For COVID-19
