$600K+ Raised For NJ Animal Shelter Decimated By Fire

Local residents and businesses are swooping in to support the shelter and its furry friends who survived the blaze.

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — The community is coming together to support a Sussex County animal shelter that underwent a tragic fire last week.

On Wednesday, around 4 p.m., a fire broke out at One Step Closer Animal Rescue (OSCAR), located at 155 Stanhope Road in Andover.

During the chaotic fire, animal rescue workers were forced to release all the dogs in an attempt to save them from the spreading flames.

The fire was eventually extinguished, but not before destroying the building and claiming the lives of six dogs.

Now, the community is rallying to support the rescue shelter and its furry survivors.

A GoFundMe launched shortly after the blaze has raised more than $630,000 to help the shelter regain its footing. The money is going towards veterinary bills and supplies to help support the displaced dogs.

Additionally, OSCAR has teamed up with I’d Rather Be With My Dog (IRBWMD), a pet-oriented clothing company that often works with shelters and other animal rescue organizations.

IRBWMD has launched a “Stand With OSCAR” campaign, in which OSCAR sweatshirts are being created, and proceeds will directly benefit the animal rescue shelter. Visit its website for details.

The community has also lent support with food and coffee donations, gift cards, and more.

Many residents also jumped at the opportunity to foster the 37 dogs who were displaced as a result of the fire.

“When something unthinkable happens, you find out very quickly who your people are. And our people? YOU showed up in ways we will never forget,” an OSCAR post read. “We are deeply grateful. Truly. We are blessed to be surrounded by a community that cares this fiercely.”
