APP.com: Martinek Embraces Position Change
State's all-time leading high school rusher and Hopatcong legend ready to play fullback.

After three successful seasons as a Rutgers running back, including a nearly 1,000-yard season, Hopatcong's Joe Martinek is embracing a position change, according to the Asbury Park Press.
Martinek, a 2007 graduate, will move to fullback. He was slated to make the change in the spring, but was hampered by injuries.
Martinek said former Rutgers fullback Brian Leonard, now playing with the Cincinnati Bengals, has been an inspiration.

“I watched him when I was in high school,’’ Martinek said, “and I've gotten the privilege to get to know him and work out with Brian the last few years. I’ve talked to Brian a lot. He’s definitely taught me a lot.’’
Martinek also said the time off last season shouldn't hurt him this fall.

“I was in every meeting answering questions and watching film,’’ said the 6-0, 220-pound Martinek, who will get his first taste of his new position when preseason camp begins Friday. “I wasn’t just standing on the sideline — I was watching my position specific. It’s a new position. But it’s not too far from running back. I just have to block people now.’’
Martinek finished his Hopatcong career as New Jersey's all-time high school rushing leader. He also helped the Chiefs to a state title.
