Cross Country: Boys, Girls Run Hard

Hopatcong's girls beat Newton, fall to Wallkill while the boys take two losses at tri-meet.

The boys and girls cross country teams ran their first meet of the season Tuesday afternoon at the Greystone course. The girls team came away with a win against Wallkill but lost to Newton. The boys team lost to both Wallkill and Newton.

IN SHORT
Dylan Capwell was the overall winner in the boys race that included seven teams from the North Jersey Athletic Conference. Alex Lehktman placed second for the Chiefs but between him and first place finisher Capwell were six of Wallkill’s runners, all finishing as a pack.

The girls split their tri-meet, squeaking by Wallkill, 26-30, but losing big to Newton, 17-38. Freshman Lauren Trigoning was the first runner in for the Chiefs, followed by Kelsey Spaziani and Nicole Walthour.

THEY SAID IT
“I was only about 50 meters behind Dylan in the first half of the race but then he went out faster in the second half and he got away. I think I ran pretty good. I felt like I really did put in everything I could.”  —Alex Lehktman

“This being the first race of the season it’s usually an eye opener for the kids. I’m confident that this experience is that during practice they will refocus. I thought the boys put in a good effort today. Unfortunately not everyone on the girls team is 100 percent healthy but they did a great job as a team.” —Coach Peter Oesen
