Gehring Has High Hopes for Hopatcong Football

The junior is our Chief of the Week.

Hopatcong High School has many talented athletes roaming its hallways and wearing its colors. Each week, Patch will speak to one of Hopatcong's' most outstanding players for our "Chief of the Week" feature. Check out our talk with junior Wyatt Gehring, Hopatcong football's starting saftey.

How did you start playing football? Around second grade a bunch of my friends were playing so I asked my dad if I could join.

What do you feel is your greatest strength on the field? The ability to move onto the next play if something bad happens. As our coaches like to say, "Have amnesia." A lot of people become overwhelmed with a bad play and allow it to become two or three bad plays. If you forget it, you can keep on going.

What are your thoughts about this upcoming season? We have high expectations and I truly believe we're going to meet them.

What is one individual goal you'd like to accomplish this season? I would like to become all-state, what every other football player wants to accomplish.

What are some of the team goals? We always set the bar high, so playoffs and states.

What has playing football taught you? It teaches you mostly everything. You need people around you to be successful and that there will be obstacles in your way, but it shouldn't stop you.

Do you think Hopatcong provides a good community for the sport? The whole community rallies around football. It's the town sport.

Do you play any other sports? Wrestling and track.

What are some of your hobbies? Being outside. I like hunting, fishing, swimming, just being around my friends.
