Girls Basketball: Hopatcong Pulls Off Overtime Upset

The Chiefs beat Wallkill Valley, 49-43, in nailbiter Tuesday.

The Chiefs beat Wallkill Valley, 49-43, in overtime on Tuesday night at home before a packed house waiting to see boys basketball star Matt Tobin snap his father's all-time scoring record.

Hopatcong senior Kristen Toropiw, who scored 13 points, sank one of two free throws to send things into OT. The Chiefs outscored the Rangers, 8-2, in the extra period for the win.

Hopatcong sophomore Heather Yaros dropped a game-high 15 points while Nicole Jaronsky, a junior, had 14. Haleigh Holmes scored three points in the win. Nikki Kaminski added four points for the Chiefs, who recorded their season's second victory.

Kelsey Murray paced Wallkill Valley with 22 points while Melissa Conrad had 13. The Rangers fell to 8-14.

Hopatcong held an eight-point lead going into the second half. But Wallkill Valley battled back, going ahead a point with 20 seconds remaining.
