Hopatcong Grows Bigger Farmer's Market

Borough's CERT team opens flea market.

The second year of the Hopatcong Farmer's Market will be larger than the innaugural edition, which was started last year as a way to draw residents and visitors to the lakeside borough to partake of fresh produce and other local products.

Councilman Michael Francis said last year's market attracted hundred of visitors from June to October.

This year, Francis said, the Sunday market will be paired with a flea market sponsored by the borough’s Community Emergency Response Team that will be held on Saturdays.

Mayor Sylvia Petillo said a $20 donation to CERT secures a table.

Francis said the market was quite successful last year even thought there was  little advertising.

This year, he said, the event received a $20,000 grant from the Highlands Council to support downtown economic activity.

“We will be able to make a bigger, better, market,” Francis said.

Councilwoman Marie Galate said the goal has been to expand the food offerings, and this year wine and cheese vendors are expected to attend the market.

Francis said a DJ has also agreed to appear every other week and provide music for the market.

The farmer’s market opens for the season on June 16, Galate said.
