Hopatcong Hawks Scare Away Foes

Hawks win their division crown at Saturday's Halloween Soccer Tournament in Mount Olive.

Their motto for the day was “You Should Be Scared.” And that is exactly what they did.

The Hopatcong Goblins, the U-10 (under 10) boys and girls travel soccer team became age/division winners after participating in a day-long Halloween Soccer Tournament at Turkey Brook Park in Mount Olive, where more than 100 teams in full Halloween regalia took to the fields Saturday.

In the first round, the Goblins won 7-1 against the Hackettstown Strikers. Goal-getters in the first game were: Connor Duffy with two; Alexander McLean with two; Paola DelCarpio with one; and with Teresa & Tyler Turnage with one each.

Hopatcong tied the Chatham United Galaxy 1-1, in a tension-filled (and scary) second round. McLean scored early in the first half against Chatham and the Goblins withstood a fierce and constant attack to end the game in a draw.

“These little kids have big hearts, lots of talent and pure determination”, coach Alex McLean said at the after-tournament pizza party to the group of proud parents gathered. “They work hard, play hard and love the game. What else can I say?" coach Mike Turnage added.
