Barring Write-Ins, Hopatcong's November Elections to be Uncontested

Mayor, two council candidates will run without rival.

What will be uncontested and red all over? If there are no write-in candidates, Hopatcong's November elections.

Mayor Sylvia Petillo is the only Republican seeking her party's nomination. No Democrats have filed to run for mayor.

Incumbent John Young and newcomer Estelle Klein will run for without competition for Republican nomination for the borough's two open council seats. Again, no Democrats have filed.

Candidates had until 4 p.m. Monday to file nominating petitions.

Incumbent Madeline McManus won't run for a fourth term. She has spent 11 years on Hopatcong's council.

Petillo will be seeking a second term. Young will be shooting for a second term. Klein was on Hopatcong's council from 2003 to 2008.

Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly made reference to an April 18 deadline for candidates to switch party affiliation. That is the last date voters can switch party affiliations in order to vote in the primary races.
