LV Edges Hopatcong in Youth Wrestling

Three forfeits doom borough boys despite valiant efforts.

The following is from Hopatcong Youth Wrestling.

The Hopatcong youth wrestlers got off to a slow start in Thursday night’s contest against the Long Valley Wolfpack.

Conner Loven (50 pounds) and Frankie Mastroeni (55 pounds) both lost their matches. Jarrett Luciani (60 pounds) got Hopatcong a win. Mikey Mastroeni (65 pounds) lost his match to put Long Valley ahead, 12-3.

Then the boys went on a streak as we have seen all year, starting with Brandon Olmstead (70 pounds) with a win. But the 75-pound match was a forfeit, the first of three crucial forfeits. Anthony Mastroeni (80 pounds) won via pin and Ray Smaha (85 pounds) won via pin in just seconds of the start of the first period. Anthony Smaha (90 pounds) won his match, giving Hopatcong the lead, 22-18.

Anthony Rodriguez (96 pounds) and Bart Yaros (102 pounds) both lost tough matches followed by the second forfeit at 110 pounds and 18 quick points and Long Valley retook the lead, 36-22.

Jake Wilkerson (118 ponds) won via pin and Scott Prior (126 pounds) lost a tough decision. Brayan Rodriguez (136 pounds) got a quick first-period pin and Dylan Frazier (146 pounds) did the same to tie the score up, 40-40.

Unfortunately, the 165-pound contest was Hopatcong’s third and final forfeit, handing Long Valley a 46-40 win.

Hopatcong's next match will be a quad Saturday against Mahwah, Paramus and Jefferson.
