Read a Challenged Book at Hopatcong Library for 'Banned Books Week'

Your daily planner for Hopatcong Borough

Here's what you need to know for Tuesday.

It's Banned Books Week! The American Library Association is urging readers to check out books from that have been challenged. The place to go for your exercise in literary sedition—aka exercising your right to read what you want—is, of course, the Hopatcong Borough Library. Since its establishment in 1982, more than 11,300 books have been challenged, according to the Banned Books Week website. The American Library Association reports that in 2012, 464 challenges were reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom.

The 10 most-challenged books last year:

  • "Captain Underpants" (series) by Dav Pilkey
  • "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie
  • "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher
  • "Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James
  • "And Tango Makes Three" by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson
  • "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini
  • "Looking for Alaska" by John Green
  • "Scary Stories" (series) by Alvin Schwartz
  • "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls
  • "Beloved" by Toni Morrison
You can read about the reasons behind these challenges on the Banned Books Week website. Stand up to The Man: Find these controversial reads and others at your local library.

Also on the list for Tuesday:

  • Former "Growing Pains" actor and cultural commentator Kirk Cameron is coming to the township. The erstwhile Mike Seaver appears at Sparta Theatre to share his conservative Christian views on morality and good and evil in "Unstoppable: A Live Event With Kirk Cameron." The event begins at 8 p.m. The venue is located at 25 Centre St. in Sparta.
  • Residents: The borough wants you to know that garbage pickup Tuesday is for those on A schedule. Recycling is for those on D schedule, and paper, boxes, glass and plastic will be picked up.
