Sports Wrap: Hopatcong Suffers Season-Opening Diamond Woes

The Hopatcong High School baseball team's season-opening opponent? A buzz saw.

Hackettstown's Matt Reynolds held the Chiefs to two hits, striking out eight and walking two as the Tigers downed Hopatcong, 6-2, at home.

Jake Winch's solo homer was the Chiefs' only highlight. It was the first regular-season game in a Hopatcong uniform for Winch, who moved to the borough from Newton.

Kirby Neuner had two hits, two RBI and a run scored for Hackettstown.

Hopatcong will travel to Kinnelon on Tuesday before Thursday's Homer Dome-opener against Delaware Valley.

The Hopatcong High School girls softball team didn't fare much better Monday.

The Chiefs were shut down, 10-0, by Hackettown's Emily Takarka in five innings.

Takarka gave up three hits and two walks while fanning five in the mercy-rule win.

Alex Sanzari recorded one of Hopatcong's hits. The Chiefs will host Morris Hills in their home-opener Wednesday.
