VIDEO: 5 Years Ago, a Legacy Cemented

Hopatcong football stalwart Joe Martinek became a legend on Oct. 13, 2006, when he broke the state's all-time rushing record in a win over Kittatinny.

Joe Martinek was already on his way to becoming a Hopatcong football hero. But five years ago Thursday, the Chiefs running back became a New Jersey legend.

Martinek, now a Rutgers University senior fullback, broke the state's all-time rushing record in a 28-7 win over Kitattinny on Oct. 13, 2006. Martinek finished with a career 7,589 yards and 80 touchdowns.

That night, Martinek admitted being a little nervous to TV cameras.

"I'm usually nervous before every game a little bit," he said. "But today was the first time I admitted I was a little nervous, you know. It's something I've worked for my whole life and I had a little bit of butterflies in my stomach."

On his Twitter feed, Martinek was a little nostalgic about the memory.
