'You Can't Cancel Halloween'

Still, watch out for hazards

Some other towns may have considered tonight a bit too frightful for trick-or-treating, but Hopatcong's deputy OEM coordinator said he doesn't know of any effort by borough officials to postpone it tonight.

"You can't cancel Halloween," Robert Haffler said. "That's like canceling Easter."

Some nearby towns have advised parents to keep children home Monday night, because downed wires or other roadway hazards left over from this weekend's snowstorm could prove problematic. Officials in most towns are advising that parents who do let their children trick-or-treat Monday practice extreme caution, accompany their children, and keep them far away from any downed poles.

Note: If your kid's getting dressed up, even if he or she isn't hitting the sidewalk trick-or-treating, he or she could win a meet-and-greet with Heidi Klum and $1,031 for charity. .

Haffler said the Hopatcong Senior Citizens Center will be open tonight to serve as a warming center, and can hold 60 people. There are cots, but residents need to bring their own bedding.

Lakeside Boulevard remained closed Monday aftetrnoon, he said. Durban road remained closed at Bergen Road. About a quarter of the borough was still without power, Haffler said.
