14-Year-Old Boy Charged With Death Of 15-Year-Old In Jersey City

A 14-year-old Jersey City boy has been charged with aggravated manslaughter following the death of a 15-year-old boy last Monday.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A 14-year-old Jersey City boy has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses in connection with the death of a 15-year-old boy last Monday.

Police found Tyshawn Smith of Jersey City, 15, with a gunshot wound on Monday, June 3, near 124 Wilkinson Ave., after receiving a 911 call around 4:20 a.m., according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Smith was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m., prosecutors said.

On Friday, prosecutors said they had arrested a 14-year-old Jersey City male in connection with the fatal shooting.

The 14-year-old, whose name prosecutors will not release, is charged as a juvenile with aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus.

"Juvenile matters are confidential and no additional information can be released at this time," prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also said on Friday that the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined Smith's Cause of Death to be a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the manner to be homicide.

Smith's death brings the total homicides in Jersey City for 2023 to 7. There was one possible homicide in Jersey City city limits in February that was not counted. Prosecutor's Office categorized the death of Luz Hernandez as in Kearny, as that's where the victim was found.
