'That's A Burn:' NJ City Called 'Suburb', NJ Twitter Reacts

New Jersey Twitter had a field day with a Washington Post story about the Saint Peter's men's basketball team in the NCAA Sweet 16.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — New Jerseyans have a lot of pride — like peacocks — and they don't like it when people mistake their professional sports teams as being located in New York, or when outsiders get the syntax wrong when describing regional favorites (Taylor ham, going down the shore). So residents reacted when a Washington Post story characterized Jersey City, usually known as the second largest city in New Jersey, as the "s-word."

"A tiny Jesuit commuter school squeezed into a few blocks of a hardscrabble New York City suburb," begins the Thursday story, "Saint Peter's last weekend became the most improbable Sweet 16 team in NCAA men's basketball tournament history."

Aryeh Cohen-Wade, a podcaster based in that very same one-horse town, could not hold back.

"WaPo just used the 's-word' to describe Jersey City...," he tweeted.

Dozens of Jerseyans retweeted him, adding comments ranging from funny to historical to the canceling-my-subscription variety.

"Idiots," responded a follower, including a GIF of the late Anthony Soprano putting his head in his hands.

Jersey blogger Amy Wilson responded with a mere, "Ahahahahahaa."

"Welp," said one woman, "that's a burn Lolol."

"I guess DC is a hardscrabble Maryland suburb now," mused a man.

"We are in a whole different state no shade to NYC what so ever," wrote another podcaster. "We are our own ppl St. Peter’s university is in the heart of Jersey City."

And Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett noted, "Tell me you've never been to @JerseyCity without telling me you've never been to Jersey City. Hey @washingtonpost, how many DC-area teams made #MarchMadness this year?"

Now, that's a burn.

Meanwhile, the proud Saint Peter's Peacocks powered up on Wednesday by scarfing down some steaks at Edwards Steakhouse in their "suburb" and getting an escort from Jersey City's finest down to Philadelphia for their Friday game:

The team will dance into the Sweet 16 at 7:09 p.m. Friday, taking on the No. 3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers.
