Rapper Ice-T Will Open Cannabis Dispensary In Jersey City

Rapper and Summit native Ice-T will help run Medicine Woman Jersey City, a 5,000-square-foot recreational dispensary on the Secaucus border.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Forty-eight years after he used to sell cannabis in California to support his pregnant girlfriend, rapper and "Law and Order" actor Ice-T has gotten approval to open a cannabis dispensary in Jersey City.

The Jersey City Cannabis Control Board approved his application last month to open a recreational dispensary, along with his partner, cannabis expert Charis Burrett, otherwise known as The Medicine Woman.

The 5,000-square-foot dispensary will open at 600 Tonnelle Ave., near the western edge of Jersey City Heights, overlooking Secaucus and about seven miles from Manhattan.

Ice T., whose birth name is Tracy Marrow, grew up in Newark and Summit, but had to move to California to live with an aunt after both parents passed away.

"I've dedicated my life and career to giving back and paving the way for minorities," said Ice T. "As a New Jersey native, I'm excited for the opportunity legalization offers our community, and I look forward to ushering in a new era for cannabis in the state. I've partnered with my friend of over 25 years, Charis B who is an authority in cannabis."

Jersey City, the second most populous city in the state, has become known as cannabis friendly. The day that Ice T's application was approved, three others were as well.

"With a fashion forward aesthetic and excellence in branding, The Medicine Woman Jersey City will include 5,000 square feet of premium retail space," said a release, "Featuring the best of New Jersey cannabis brands, limited edition merch, education, and inspiration."

The company said it intends to partner with local charities, and will hire local workers.

"The Medicine Woman Jersey City is committed to sourcing staff from the local community and has partnered with several local charitable organizations. Inaugural partnerships include The Last Prisoner Project, Jersey City Mural and Arts Program, Jersey City Employment and Training Program, Hudson County Community College, with more to be announced," said the release.

The Medicine Woman started as a California non-profit cannabis delivery service.
