Princeton Academy Headmaster Olen Kalkus to Lecture on Gender and Learning Differences at Lawrence Library, November 17

Olen Kalkus, founding headmaster of Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, will present the lecture, "Gender and Learning," on November 17th at 7pm at the Lawrence branch of the Mercer County Library System. Mr. Kalkus will share research on gender differences in brain development in children and how it relates to education.
Mr. Kalkus argues that understanding gender differences plays an important role in establishing the best methods for teaching boys and girls. Such understanding, if followed, might shrink some of the gender discrepancies we see in the outcomes.
“A great deal of research into brain-based gender differences in learning has emerged,” commented Mr. Kalkus. “The assumption that co-educational environments are the best environments for children in all grades is coming into question as this emerging research coincides with the declining level of academic and co-curricular achievement of males nationwide.”
A growing body of evidence suggests that changes to educational programs since the 1990's favor girls' learning styles over those of boys' learning styles. New research in the field of gender-based brain development supports gender-based approaches towards educating children and has been discussed in books such as "Why Gender Matters" by Leonard Sax, "The Trouble with Boys" by Peg Tyre, and "Why Boys Fail" by Richard Whitmire. Mr. Kalkus will share some of the more compelling findings from this research and their implication for educating children in the twenty-first century.
The lecture "Gender and Learning" is on November 17th at 7pm at The Lawrence Library. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://webserver.mcl.org/ or contact 609-989-6920.
