Rep. Sherrill: Here’s Why I Voted Yes On Coastline Protection Act

A bill would create a moratorium on oil/gas leasing along the Atlantic/Pacific coasts. Here's why Rep. Mikie Sherrill voted for it.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A federal bill that would create a permanent moratorium on oil/gas leasing along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts has gained the vote of U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill.

Sherrill, a Democratic lawmaker who represents New Jersey’s 11th District, voted in favor of the Coastal Marine Economics Protection Act (H.R. 1941), which passed in the House last week. The bill will now head to the Senate.

Sherrill represents several towns in Essex, Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties.

Oil and gas interests opposed the bill, saying such a ban would increase U.S. dependence on foreign oil. But Sherrill said the bill is needed to protect New Jersey’s 130 miles of coastline.

“New Jersey’s coastline is a precious resource that sustains our environment, fishing industry, and tourism economy,” Sherrill said. “Offshore drilling puts all three of those things at risk. Congress needs to focus on growing our clean energy economy and following New Jersey’s lead by investing in a clean energy future.”
