N.J. Nor'easter UPDATE: Flooding; Trains Resume; Roof Blows Off; Beaches Battered; Damage (Video)

A roof blew off a condo complex, local beaches were battered and flooding was everywhere as a nor'easter plowed through New Jersey.

A roof blew off a condominium complex, local beaches were battered, thousands were without power and other parts of New Jersey were damaged as a nor'easter plowed through on Monday and early Tuesday.

So far, more than 10,000 people were without power in the following counties: Ocean, Monmouth, Atlantic, Middlesex, Somerset, Union, Morris and Cape May.

A number of schools were delayed or canceled on Tuesday as several inches of snow, sleet and rain fell across the state, and strong winds exceeding 55 mph plagued many towns.

In Hoboken, the parks were closed at 4 p.m. on Monday because of high winds. In Barnegat, Bayshore Drive was closed in the area of the bathing beach because of flooding. And the Griggstown Causeway in Montgomery Township is closed.

In Long Beach Island, Long Beach Boulevard has flooding in many areas - just about every passable street had some issue:

  • People are actually stopping for the red light at 28th Street with water covering half their wheels or more, or even up to their door.
  • Fire hydrants in front and across the street from Faria's were almost completely covered. Pickup trucks and SUVs slogging through.
  • Long Beach Boulevard has been shut down in spots, and there are some fears about what could happen when the tide peaks at Manahawkin Bridge.
  • Currently the tide is about 3 inches above last night's. The lights on the new gazebo at the end of 20th were flickering about 10 minutes ago and are now out due to water.

But the list of flooding incidents increased massively by Tuesday morning.

Video from The Asbury Park Press showed a roof blowing off a Long Branch condominium complex, Ocean View Towers, as wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph blew through.

Here is a list of flooding incidents:

The National Weather Service had issued a high-wind warning through 9 p.m. Monday, and a flood watch was in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday in Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Mercer, Morris and Somerset counties.

Here are more photos, videos and important notes about the storm:

Flooding remained a threat, meanwhile, particularly in Monmouth County on Monday and Tuesday morning. Police in waterfront towns, such as Aberdeen, are warning drivers to avoid flooded roadways and move away from beaches.

Elsewhere on Monday:

  • Trees have already been knocked down by high winds in Middletown Township; Red Hill Road at Kings Highway is impassable due to a large tree downed by winds.
  • Downed lines closed Leesville Road Jersey, and Jersey Central Power & Light was repairing the area around 1 p.m.
  • Water was flooding streets in Point Pleasant Beach, Sea Bright and Tuckerton, and residents were asked to move vehicles - or themselves - to higher ground.
  • The most power outages were in Neptune, with 300; Barnegat, 459; Manchester, 517; 500 in Westfield; and Galloway, 210.
  • It is possible that the strong winds may blow down limbs, trees and power lines, which may result in isolated power outages.
  • In addition to the strong winds and heavy rain, Morris, Union, Somerset, Bergen and Warren counties will also experience a wintry mix scenario.
  • The heaviest rain will fall this evening with the possibility of additional sleet. A coating of 1 inch of sleet is possible, with the best chance for a coating of 1 inch toward and north of I-80.
  • The main threat will end between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, with lighter rain and occasionally mixed showers still possible through Tuesday on the tail end of the storm.

The rain and wind may have already contributed to a number of traffic problems early Monday:

  • Utility Pole Down, NJ 73: A utility pole was down on NJ 73 northbound ramp to westbound NJ 38 in Maple Shade Twp. Exit ramp closed and detoured follow detour, five-to-10-minute delay.
  • Downed pole, NJ 50: A downed pole was reported on NJ 50 in both directions North of CR 645/Buckhill Rd in Estell Manor. All lanes closed - use caution.
