87-Year-Old Loses $15K In Phone Scam: Hackettstown Police

Police said the woman sent $15,000 in cash to an address in Michigan.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — An 87-year-old Hackettstown woman lost $15,000 in cash through a phone scam, police said on Friday.

The woman believed she was paying bail for one of her sons, police said. She received a call on Monday from a man who claimed to be her son. The woman told police the voice sounded wrong, but that the man said he just had a cold.

Another man got on the line, saying he was the son's attorney and they needed $15,000 for bail, police said.

The woman mailed $15,000 in cash via FedEx to an address in Westland, Michigan. The scammer called back asking for an additional $10,000, and thats when the woman became suspicious, police said.
