As Election Day Draws Nearer

Some thoughts about our local government

It's just a couple of weeks until the general election, and that means it's time for you the voters to determine what makes a good township committee member.

My opponent touts his experience, commitment, and energy. These are all admirable qualities. However, he's been so entrenched in local government for so long, I believe he's missing important opportunities to offset our property taxes, and not seeing some obvious deficiencies in our township’s infrastructure. Beyond that, my opponent has offered no solutions to our township’s lack of preparedness during the recent storms.

It's clear that the Washington Township Committee needs better planning. We need to explore vital upgrades to our communications and computer systems – upgrades that can ultimately save money and maybe even lives. Our township committee needs better interaction with local and district school boards, and better coordination with county and state services. In short, we need a township committee that plans ahead instead of reacting, and pointing fingers, after the fact.

This is what I believe, and why I'm running for Washington Township Committee. Most of all, however, I believe that our township committee meetings and our township committee's actions should be open and inclusive. We need to know the issues being considered – issues that affect our safety, our services and our pocketbooks. Government must be transparent and accountable in order for it to be of, for and by the people.

Please get involved, come out to township committee meetings, and remember to vote on Nov. 8.
