'By George' Concert and Luncheon

Celebrate Spring with the Gershwin concert and luncheon at the Library sponsored by the Friends of the Library

“By George” Concert and Luncheon, sponsored by the Friends of the Washington Twp. Public Library on Friday, March 22, 2013 starting at 11 a.m.

George and Ira Gershwin’s music could lift the hearts and spirits of people during the worst economic downturn of the last century.  If you’re curious as to why, catch Barbara McCarthy’s latest show.  Gershwin music is so timeless, it continues to cheer people during our current downturn and keep them dancing, or at least bouncing in their seats, with melodies influenced by the composer’s zest for life and his Jazz Age optimism.  It’s a great way to forget the pressures and stress of our lives today, if only for a short while, with the positive lyrics of Ira paired with his brother’s rhapsodic music.

McCarthy tells the Gershwin story.  It is, after all, a cabaret show.  You’re not going to hear one song sung after another, but rather the story behind the songs, the why and the how they were written.  You learn about Gershwin (George, that is), the scrappy kid from the lower East Side, the Tin Pan Alley virtuoso, the party animal, who flitted between the social circles of New York City and, despite countless number of sexual dalliances, could never commit to a lasting relationship.  It was as if he had so much to do and so little time, which actually, was the case.
