Going For The Gold

Going for my Gold Award turned out to be an extremely rewarding experience in which I got to make young girls with cancer feel beautiful thanks to the help of my community.

On Sunday, May 6th, I received my Gold Award as a part of Girl Scout Troop 1804’s Gold Award Ceremony. 7 girls from my troop received their award. We were joined by friends and family of all of the girls and participated in the ceremony where we all spoke about our project, heard speeches from our leaders, got pinned by our parents, and received acknowledgements from many different town officials and representatives.

Even though I hit many obstacles in the road during my project, the beauty bags were completed with the help of many family members, friends, and the community. I got over 3,000 items and $650 donated to my project after speaking to Girl Scout leaders, my church, friends, and community members. The generosity of the town was amazing and I was able to put together 40 bags with about 80 beauty items in each, along with some inspirational gifts, such as bracelets and books for the girls.

I wasn’t sure I was going to do the Gold Award in the beginning, but I can easily say that this has been one of the most rewarding and amazing journeys of my high school career. It has allowed me to help others, learn leadership, resourcefulness, problem solving, and time management, along with teaching me to never give up and that I can do anything I put my mind to. This experience was truly humbling and I wouldn’t trade the past few months for anything. Girl Scouts has been a vital part of my entire life and has shaped me into the person I am today. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to change lives and make young girls with cancer feel beautiful through my Gold Award project because I believe that everyone deserves the right to feel good about themselves. After such a rewarding experience, I encourage everybody to continue to “believe in your beauty”.
