New School Year, New Beginnings

The beginning of school is the start of a journey for all students, no matter what age.

The first day of school is always filled with mixed emotions. Students are sad to say goodbye to summer, but excited for the year ahead. Ask any student how their first day of school was and you will hear different stories about teachers, schedules, and classmates.

My sophomore year, I showed up late to my first class on the first day of school. I spent the first 20 minutes in the guidance office because I lost my schedule sometime in between getting off the bus and the first bell. In guidance, they thought I was a freshman and when I finally got to my class, my teacher made a joke about me already being a troublemaker. The worst part is, the schedule was in my locker the whole time. It was an embarrassing start to my second year of high school. Moral of the story: Bring multiple copies of your schedule to school and don't panic if you lose it.  There are always people to help you. Many freshman do not realize this. For instance, when I was a freshman, I did not know that you could just walk into the guidance office and talk to your counselor. I thought you had to make an appointment, so I never went. Now, I go at least once a week, sometimes just to talk. Freshman are going from being the big fish at the middle school to the "bottom of the food chain" at the high school. The most important thing to know is that there are always people to help you whether you need to find a classroom, get help with homework, or get a new copy of your schedule!

We have almost made it through our first month of the school year. The hardest part is over. We're starting to get to know our teachers and freshman are getting settled with rotating schedules, lockers, activities, and high school life. Whether a freshman or senior, or anywhere in between, we are all creating new beginnings this school year.
