The Green Market in Long Valley came up with another fun event yesterday. They held a baked peach pie competition at the market at four o'clock. Eight really good home baked peach pie entries were judged by three "experts" while contestants and market shoppers watched closely. The final results of the ratings were very close, and I would have gladly taken any one of the pies home. What a difference between fresh baked goods from a resident and the type of baked goods you get at a supermarket or big box store. Kate from the Green Market came up with the idea, and I hope they have it again next year. Local peach farmers missed out on a great opportunity to promote their products. (Hint, hint: A Blueberry Pie contest would be a great idea, and I would volunteer to be a judge.)
Kudos to Leona and Kate for continuing to promote locally produced food items and offer residents and visitors a relaxed, friendly place to shop. The vendors take the time to explain their products and how to prepare them.
Next week the NJ Secretary of Agriculture is scheduled to be at the market as part of a program promoting NJ Farms, Farmers and local businesses. Hope to see some of you there.
