Primary Election Day Thoughts

Primary election day thoughts from a tired poll worker.

After completing a mandatory training class on Saturday, my wife and I spent today as “newbie” poll workers in District 2 (Fairmount Fire Company) and District 7 (Heath Village) respectively. Seasoned poll vets helped us, and our neophyte compatriots through every of step in guiding voters through this primary election. Seeing familiar faces and meeting new neighbors was rewarding during the 15 hours of juggling tables, voting booth duties, bathroom breaks, and providing assistance to voters.

My six District 7 co-workers were equal part Democrat and Republican. In yakking over the hours, we found that though our philosophical, ideological, and political views were different, concern for our communities provided common ground. It was a good experience for all of us and I’m looking forward to working with all of them again in November’s general election. I would encourage all, especially younger voters, to engage in this process. New leadership is going to come from those who participate, and that is crucial to the future of our township.
