"The Fun Classes": Electives

How can you make high school fun? Add "the fun classes"!

We’re halfway! Next week is the end of the second marking period and the end of the first half of the school year. While students will still be going to go to most of the same classes, still have the same amount of work, and continue their activities, there is one change that happens at this time of year: students switch electives.

Most schedules allow for 2 elective slots, but a lot of electives are only half year classes, so some students can take 4 a year and switch halfway through the year. Seniors sometimes have even more room for electives because they have their required classes out of the way. Electives also fulfill credits that are required for graduation.

There are many different electives and they provide a way for students to take classes that interest them and may lead them down a path for a future major or career. Some examples of electives are cooking, video and media classes, band, marketing and advertising, business, and world wide web. There are many different options for students. A full list is available from a guidance counselor.

Electives can be fun and often our favorite classes because they are the ones that we want to take, not that we’re forced to take. In my high school career, I have taken cooking classes twice and band all four years. Both of these classes have been extremely fun and I have learned a lot in both. I have always loved music, but  I was never a fan of cooking until I took the culinary arts class at school. Now I love to cook and experiment with food (which my mom loves)! Electives are always a great way to learn something new!
