Washington Township Green Team 2012 Initiatives

Green Team agenda items and a brief survey

I’m excited to be part of the townships Green Team ad hoc committee. Chaired by Andrew Cappola, the committee has an ambitious agenda for 2012 including walking and biking safe routes, creating a local Green fair, promotion of local produce and businesses, possibly establishing a community garden, and, near and dear to my heart, recycling initiatives and events. The Green Team meets for an hour on the second Wednesday of every month and guests are welcome to sit in and share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

During the last meeting (02/08), the importance of public feedback on a community garden was stressed. Residents could plant and maintain a small plot, and harvest the fruits of their labors. Such gardens are popular in more densely populated communities with smaller properties, but do they make sense in WT? For the record, Heath Village has a wonderful community garden, but they have the population and property blueprint to support such. So, here are the questions:

Who would be interested in participating in the construction of such a garden?

Who would be interested in leasing a plot in the garden?

Does anyone have any experience or insights on running such a project?

Nancy Salvatore suggested Kohler Pond as a suitable venue for such a project.  Any other suggestions for suitable WT-owned sites? Remember, water and accessibility are key requisites.

Are there any concerns about conflicts with local producers and businesses?

Are there any other issues, concerns, or comments about the idea? All comments are appreciated.
