Who is Joe Keyes?
A few words about Joe hte candidate, his perspective on WT and his view about the future...
I’m Joe Keyes, Democratic candidate for Township Committee this November. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing issues that affect the township, and my views about the future of our township and what can be done to make it better.
Who am I? My roots go deep in Morris County. I was born and raised in Morristown, as was my father. My grandfather owned a blacksmith shop in Morristown and was a local farmer in what is now Cedar Knolls. The blacksmith shop later became my father’s “Flying A” service station. I attended local Catholic schools, graduated from Morristown HS, County College of Morris, and went on to William Paterson College of NJ.
My wife and I moved into our home in the Long Valley section of Washington Township over 18 years ago. First captivated by the serenity and great beauty around us, we gradually learned about the area’s rich heritage such as the Schooly’s Mountain bible camps and German Valley farms and industries. We enjoy our backyard visitors—birds and other critters, and frequent the local trails and roadways, on bikes, sneakers, or in our old MGA and have a rapport with many local businesses. We are parents of three, and grandparents to four. I have been an Information Technology consultant for the past 30+ years.

So, what affects me and why am I running? I have found so much can be done to improve our township. Since moving here, I’ve watched our township try to navigate the development boom, struggle with Highlands regulations, have seen double-digit property tax increases, and missed opportunities for improvements to our business district. There is a serious disconnect between our municipal government and our two school boards that must be addressed. As an IT professional, I am an innovator and a problem solver, and WT needs both.
I’m looking forward to your feedback, questions, and suggestions.
