Ex-WTPD Officer Gets 6 Months Probation For Drunk Driving In PA

The former Washington Township cop pled guilty to a DUI and a hit-and-run.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — A former Washington Township police officer was sentenced to six month probation for crashing into several cars while drunk in Pennsylvania.

William McCarthy III, 46, of Great Meadows, pled guilty to DUI and hit-and-run charges, nj.com reported, after he failed to show up for a September trial.

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but was paroled after just five days because he received credit for an 85 day stay in rehab.

As Patch previously reported, McCarthy allegedly struck multiple cars in both towns while under the influence. In addition to DUI, he was originally charged with resisting arrest and reckless driving. Both those charges were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea.

McCarthy, 45, from Great Meadows, was an officer with the Washington Township Police Department at the time of his arrest, and had been suspended without pay. He voluntarily resigned in Nov. 2016, Lt. Douglas Compton told Patch in September.

This was not McCarthy's first drunk driving arrest. He had previously been arrested in Blairstown in 2015, and lost his license for 90 days. He was suspended without pay from the WTPD during that time, as Patch reported.
