Full Time Meds Drop-Off Huge Success in First Month

Morris County Sheriff's Office retrieves 55 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs from Washington Twp. after three weeks of use.

In just three weeks of full operation, the unwanted medicines drop-off box at Washington Township Police Headquarters has been a huge success.

Members of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office came to collect the box’s contents Tuesday, Nov. 24, less than a month after the service became available, and took out 55-pounds of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

“The community has been very cooperative as far as drop-off hours and following guidelines of which items are accepted,” said Lt. Doug Compton.

The box was bolted into the lobby of police headquarters by the department of public works after being donated by Morris County Prevention is Key. The collections will be scheduled by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.

In the past, drug drop-off opportunities were scheduled semi-annually, and yielded between 80 and 100-pounds at each event, Compton said. Collecting 55-pounds in the first three weeks validates the need for the box in Washington Township.
