'God Squad' Rallies Teens to Make Difference in Long Valley

Youth ministry starts season with crafts, food for local pantry.

Nearly 100 teens congregated at St. Luke’s Church on West Mill Road Wednesday day all with a common goal: spread the word of God while helping others in their home community.

The church’s youth ministry kickoff meeting saw the teens, who call themselves the God Squad, come together and create 65 scarecrow centerpieces filled with pasta for the Long Valley Food Pantry.

Each scarecrow came with a note that said, “I said a prayer for you today asking God to keep your worries away.” The initiative is the first step in the church guiding its teens to helping make a difference in the community.

“The attendance to the meeting was commendable and says a lot about the kinds of kids we have in our parish and in our town,” said Nina Dorlon, youth minister at St. Luke’s. “It is refreshing to see so many young adults who want to do nice things for others and make a difference in the world.”
