Project to Halt Crashes on Schooley's Mountain Will Close Road Wednesday

County will mill portions of roadway that have seen major jump in crashes in 2014.

The southern end of Schooley’s Mountain Road will be closed for most of Wednesday as the county puts forth an effort to halt crashes on a dangerous section of the roadway.

Washington Township Police announced Monday the county roadway will be shut from Springtown Road to Fairview Avenue between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday. The work, which includes milling of the surface between Camp Washington Road and “Big Turn,” is expected to last just one day, Lt. Doug Compton said.

All traffic heading south will be detoured onto East Springtown Road to Naughright Road. Vehicles traveling north will be detoured onto Fairview Avenue to Naughright Road.

A large amount of congestion and delays is expected throughout the day, and motorists should plan alternate routes, Compton said.

The portion of roadway, which includes a slope and slight bends, has seen a jump in crashes in 2014, as reported on by Patch here. Eleven crashes between Jan. 5 and Oct. 14 were all reported within a quarter-mile stretch, according to police reports.
