Summer Safety Tips to Prevent Burglaries from the Washington Township Police
Stay safe in the summer.

The Township of Washington Police Department recently put out Summer Safety Tips to Prevent Burglaries to remind residents how to stay safe.
Washington Township has offered the following tips:
- Although it’s tempting to keep doors and windows open because of summer heat, residents are advised otherwise. Keep your doors closed and locked, because an open door is an invitation. Always make sure your garage door is closed and locked.
- Use double locking devices on windows and sliding glass doors to prevent break-ins and theft.
- Before going on vacation, have your mail and newspapers stopped or have a neighbor pick them up. You can go to https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/ or call 1-800-275-8777 to stop your mail.
- Don't post vacation pictures on social media accounts until after your home, otherwise anyone can know you're not at home and your house is vacant.
- When you're out for the evening or on vacation, leave the inside lights of your home on timers so it looks like someone is inside.
- Always set your alarm before leaving your house.
- Avoid home improvement scams and deception burglaries by being particularly alert when someone is in your neighborhood looking to perform home repair. Ask for identification and call the company to get verification.
- Don't forget to roll up all car windows, lock your car doors, and remove valuables from your car, especially if you're going to a lake, swim club, park, etc.
- Don't leave your kids or pets in your car. The summer heat can kill them if they're trapped in a locked, closed car.
- Call 911 to alert police of any unusual activity.
