Police officers were able to pull the man, who was 'bleeding profusely,' from the dump truck and an EMT helped render aid.

MAHWAH, N.J. — A good Samaritan stopped and helped the injured driver of a dump truck that flipped on Route 17 North Monday afternoon.

The double-axle dump truck was in the left-hand lane near MacArthur Boulevard when the driver lost control and the truck flipped onto the driver's side, trapping him inside, said Police Chief James Batelli.

The driver suffered a "severe laceration" to his forehead and was "bleeding profusely," Batelli said.

The dump truck hit a vehicle and the driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, Batelli said. A passenger in the vehicle was not hurt.

Batelli said the crash may have been caused by "mechanical problems," with the dump truck. It was carrying broken pieces of cement and other debris, which spilled out onto Route 17 when it flipped Batelli said. Police do not know what the truck's destination was.

The crash delayed traffic on Route 17 North for several hours Monday.
