Gov. Phil Murphy Touts 10K Jobs Coming To NJ: Here's Where

Here's where you can easily get a job and make a decent living, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says. Watch the video below.

New Jersey may just be the land of opportunity, Gov. Phil Murphy says.

Murphy appeared in Edison on Monday to deliver remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new Amazon Fulfillment Center, which is supposed to hire 2,500 people.

The event was among three big announcements the Murphy administration has made in recent weeks about new facilities and programs that could employ as many as 10,000 people in New Jersey.

Just a few weeks ago, the Amazon Fulfillment Center in West Deptford announced its looking to hire 2,000 employees after opening this past weekend. Employees at the 655,000 square-foot center will pick products and pack and ship orders.

The West Deptford and Edison facilities will be among of 175 fulfillment centers worldwide.

Last week, Murphy announced a new full-time job training program, in partnership with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and UNITE HERE Local 54, that is expected to help employ as many as 5,000 people in Atlantic City.

"We've got a great workforce – eager, smart and skilled," Murphy said. "We have a location that's second to none, easily connected to markets with tens of millions of customers."

Murphy said the Amazon facility in Edison will be 900,000 square feet of "economic progress."

"You can improve our bottom line and improve ours," Murphy told Amazon officials at the grand opening. "With this center, we're off and running."

Amazon Fulfillment Centers hold anything a person can order on Amazon, according to the retail giant's website. A customer completes a purchase, and in the fulfillment center the items they ordered are pulled from the shelves, packed for shipment, and sent on their way.

"Most fulfillment center jobs require a full-time schedule commitment, and we often have seasonal positions available during our busiest times of the year," the company says. "You'll have the opportunity to learn multiple processes in the warehouse, including running our powered equipment."

The Atlantic City job-training program, meanwhile, will be held at the Atlantic City Convention Center. With startup funding from the Department of Labor, this program will provide training, education and support services for jobs in the culinary and hospitality industry, he said.

The program, developed by Local 54 in consultation with business owners and executives, will train residents for 5,000 entry-level positions.

“A stronger and fairer economy cannot be established without good and permanent jobs for the people of New Jersey,” said Murphy. “The establishment of this program ensures that when Atlantic City rises, so do its residents.”

With the opening of new casino properties in Atlantic City and the resurgence of the city’s hospitality industry, there is a high demand for union labor, Murphy said.

This training program will provide local residents with the tools and support they need to take on full-time, permanent, union jobs, he said.

The training program will focus on training residents who are underemployed or living in poverty, with community partners such as the Atlantic County Recovery Court, Covenant House, WorkFirst NJ, the Atlantic County One-Stop Career Center, as well as community corrections partners from the county, state, and federal levels.
