On March 21, at approximately 7:45 a.m. in Behrman Park in Lake Como, a resident was walking her dog when there was an unprovoked attack by a raccoon, police said.

Neither the dog nor its owner were injured in the incident. Police as well as the Monmouth County SPCA responded. However, they were unsuccessful in capturing the raccoon.

While no one was injured in the incident, Belmar police say they "continue to encourage our residents to be vigilant and cautious around any wild animals."

"And if you see any animals that are acting strangely or aggressively, please contact the Belmar Police Department immediately."

If you see a raccoon or any other aggressive wildlife, please take precautionary steps to protect yourselves, family and pets and contact the police department, auhorities say.

The report comes a month after a raccoon attacked and killed a pet cat on 13th Avenue in Belmar. That raccoon tested positive for rabies, according to police. It was the second rabid raccoon captured in Belmar this year.
