Two Spring Lake Police Officers Save Fisherman Whose Boat Foundered

The officers swam 100 yards in icy waters to rescue Steve Stoop.

Two Spring Lake police officers wasted no time plunging into the icy, wind-whipped waters of Spring Lake after a fisherman’s boat took on water, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Officers Emmett Smith and William Kelly swam 100 yards at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday to rescue Steve Stoop of Hainesport and guide him back to safety, Spring Lake Police Chief Edward Kerr said.

Stoop and the officers were examined by paramedics, but did not require any further medical treatment, he said.
