From Ocean County, Four Centuries in the Making, by Pauline S. Miller:
William Torrey is considered the founder of Manchester. A tract of land was sold to Timothy Wiggins, a merchant of London, in 1841, as well as William Hurry, a tustee for Adeline Torrey, who was Torrey's wife.
The Torreys moved from New York to Manchester that same year, to a two-story house on Church Street. Torrey is credited with having the entrepreneurial foresight that helped develop the region, and help Manchester break from then-Dover Township in 1865.
