This year, the Varsity team’s theme word is “Fire,” which could not be more apt given how well they’re performing. They’re at the top of their division currently in the 50th year of their program.
Valerie Cotler, who was in the first CHS Field Hockey Varsity team in 1978 and has been coming to watch this season’s games, remembers the coach, Melinda Gardner, starting the first practice by holding up a stick and saying, “this is a hockey stick.” Cotler adds, “Athletic opportunities were limited and we had no idea what we were doing, but embraced it because we were just so happy to have a team sport to play. And soon we did know what we were doing!”
In addition to this being a special year, Coach Stephanie Rivera recently celebrated 50 wins as head coach against a higher division team. “Our 2026 Varsity field hockey team is truly one of the most special teams I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching. From the supportive team dynamic, to the desire to work hard every single day, it is fitting that it is this exact team that falls on the 50th anniversary of our program!” said Coach Rivera.
The four captains this year are, seniors –– Ava Casciaro who leads the defenders, Madeleine Popowsky and Phoebe Perlman, top scorers this season, and, Junior –– Jamie Tarrow, leading in assists.
“We are proud Cougars playing a game we love in a legacy program for Columbia, with the best coaches in a winning season. What could be better?? Come out to Underhill and hear us roarrrrr!” collectively said the co-captains.
To celebrate 50 years, CHS Field Hockey is running a $50 For 50 Years Campaign!
Senior night at Underhill is on September 30 at 6pm. It coincides with the college fair but we’re hoping we can fill the stands with as many supporters as possible.
