There are causes of eye damage that people are now always aware of. I would like to comment on an article from The Huffington Post that details some unusual potential sources of eye damage. While age contributes to vision problems, there are several other causes of eye-related issues that an individual may be unwillingly subjecting himself or herself to. These factors can increase rates of glaucoma, dry eyes, and vision loss.
While most people understand the damage that smoking causes to the heart and lungs, it is important to note that smokers may also see a negative impact on their eyes. Those who smoke have an increased risk of suffering from cataracts and retinal disease that can end up causing vision loss if left untreated. Smoking also aggravates pre-existing eye problems, such as optic never damage or age-related macular degeneration.
Dr. Rachel Bishop, of the National Eye Institute, explains, "Smoking seems to affect circulation. As we get older, life forces tend to challenge our circulatory systems--add smoking to it and it's even worse."
Much like exposure to UV rays damages a person's skin, the sun can also cause eye problems. This is because UV light damages DNA, which can then lead to permanent cellular damage. When a person plans on venturing outside, he or she should lather up with sunscreen, and should also don a hat or sunglasses to protect the sensitive eye area from the sun's harsh rays. Even if the day does not appear especially bright, this kind of protection is still necessary, since even cloudy days can lead to sun damage.
Niki Silverstein notes, "While much attention is spent on protecting skin, preserving the eyes and area around the eyes is equally important in order to fight health concerns down the road. The eyes are highly sensitive and require care in order to prevent premature aging, vision damage, and other concerns. An individual who has questions about caring for their eyes should seek guidance from a doctor in order to ensure that they are doing all they can to protect their vision."
A dependence on technology has also led to an increase in eye problems and poor vision. As individuals sit and stare at computer screens, phones, and iPads all day, they tend to blink less. This can cause fatigue and eye muscle strain over time. In order to prevent this from happening, an employee should make it a point to take breaks in order to allow their eyes to look away from a screen and get a rest.
Niki Silverstein advises people that eye pain, trouble with vision, and other eye-related concerns are not just a normal part of aging, and require care from a doctor should they occur.
Niki Silverstein is a New Jersey-based ophthalmologist who provides eye care to patients of all ages. She is the founder of Silverstein Eye, which is a division of Niki Silverstein Eye MD, LLC.
