Mendham Twp Inspecting Buses Following Fatal Crash
Police said random checks would be conducted throughout the rest of the year.

MENDHAM, NJ — Following Thursday's bus crash that killed a student and a teacher from Paramus, Mendham Township police say they will conduct school bus safety checks.
"With the tragic event of yesterday still on our mind, we will be conducting School Bus Safety Checks for all our buses/students departing the Mendham Township Elementary School and Mendham Township Middle School today," Township police announced. Random checks will be conducted through the end of the school year.
New Jersey is one of only seven states that requires all school buses to be equipped with seatbelts, the National Conference of State Legislatures says. Federal law only mandates seat belts on school buses under a certain weight. School buses also tend to be involved in fewer traffic accidents than cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says. Four to six school children die annually in school bus accidents.
