Another Rabid Raccoon Found In Middletown

The raccoon was acting abnormally in a wooded area between Taylor Lane and Cherry Tree Lane in Middletown.

Another raccoon found in Middletown has tested positive for rabies.

In the latest case, the animal was acting abnormally and seemed lethargic when it was found in a wooded area between Taylor Lane and Cherry Tree Lane, officials said.

There were no reports of humans or pets interacting with that raccoon, according to Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto.

In a news release issued Friday, the township said its health department received laboratory confirmation of the positive rabies test.

Last month, officials also issued an alert after a raccoon found in the area of Millbrook Drive in the New Monmouth section of town tested positive for rabies.

In that case, the raccoon was tested after a “possible interaction with a dog,” officials said. No wounds were found on that dog.

Officials are reminding residents to keep pets away from wildlife, and to make sure pets are properly vaccinated.

Anyone who finds a sick or injured animal, should stay away from it and call Animal Control at 732-615-2097 immediately. After hours and on weekends, call police, officials said.
