Update: Crews Call Off Search For Day, Swimmer Still Not Found At Sandy Hook

Around 3 p.m., the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, on Twitter, said “operations in recovery of (the) swimmer at Sandy Hook have ceased. The male was not found.”

Around 4 p.m. WABC News said the search by helicopter crews and divers had been called off for the day, but that foot patrols along the beach were still ongoing.

The 25-year-old man went missing at Sandy Hook Beach B, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Daphne Yun, a spokeswoman for Gateway National Recreation Area told the Associated Press the swimmer was last seen in distress in the water around 7:30 p.m. and the search began a half hour later.

There were two groups of swimmers in the water, but lifeguards were already off-duty - they work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Associated Press reported.

The search was suspended late Wednesday and resumed Thursday morning, according to WNBC.

The National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, NYPD aviation, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Police, and rescue workers from Middletown, Highlands, Atlantic Highlands, and Seabright, all responded to the scene.
