Middletown Cemetery Wants To Add A Crematory

Fair View cemetery wants to build a crematorium very close to Rt. 35 southbound.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ - Fair View Cemetery, the large cemetery off Highway 35 and Oak Hill Road in Middletown, wants to add a crematory. Fair View put forth a proposal before the Middletown Zoning Board of Adjustment for a 1,128-square-foot human crematorium, to be located along its Rt. 35 border, according to a report in The Two River Times.

The project is currently awaiting the zoning board's approval. The cemetery needs the board's approval because they need a variance: Current laws stipulate that crematories must be set back 200 feet from the nearest road. This crematory would only be 50 feet from Rt. 35 southbound.

Fair View cemetery already has a permit from the NJ DEP, which sets the allowable amount of discharge allowed by crematories in the state. According to the permit, their incinerator cannot burn more than 150 pounds per hour and can only operate 4,160 hours per year.
